Okay, I LOVE GRILLI SWING! If you’re in Oulu – which is a nice place to visit, by the way – go here. It was somewhat by chance that I ate here: I had to drive from Hossa National Park, where I ran the Kainuu Trail 78k, to Oulu to catch a train and, due to burning a tremendous amount of calories the previous day, needed a good meal before catching said train. Because I had to watch my phone data usage, my husband did me the favor of scoping out spots and found this one. I was a bit nervous about driving more in Oulu beyond returning my rental car, but I was hungry and gave it a go. I’m so glad I did!
Grilli Swing is run by an extremely kind Bosnian woman. I’m not exactly sure what I ordered since I basically asked for something vegetarian that she would recommend and she made it for me! The meal consisted of a veggie patty between two flatbreads with sour cream, cabbage, and tomato (I kindly ate most of it), with shredded cheese and chili sauce sprinkled on top. It was terrifically tasty! I have decided this is an honorary veggie burger.
For a little while, I was the only person eating inside, so I chatted a bit with the woman. She told me about moving to Finland and learning Finnish, and asked me what I was doing there. There was a photo of Mostar on the wall and she was excited to learn I would be visiting there in a few fmonths. I was very impressed by her switching from Bosnian to speak with her husband in the back to English, to speak with me, to Finnish to speak with other customers. She was extremely sweet and brought me free cookies and chocolates for dessert!
Next time I am in Oulu, I am stopping by to say hi to the kind restaurant owner and get one of these burger-things again!
