It can be difficult to choose a place to eat where you’re in a new spot. Luckily, while in Bled, Slovenia, we came across Public & Vegan Kitchen. I’ll admit sometimes I’m a bit suspicious of vegan places while traveling in more touristy spots; they seem to cater to vegan tourists who might be struggling to find options without necessarily an attention to innovative and tasty cooking. However, Public & Vegan Kitchen did not fit this description.
One fun thing about the restaurant is that they offer a mix-and-match of four patties and four buns. All burgers come with greens, tomato (unless you’re me and say “no!”), onion, vegan mayo, garlic, mustard, and ketchup (“no!”). I opted for the Public patty, which is made of buckwheat, mushrooms, potato, and leek, in a whole wheat bun. The patty was delightful, with had a nice mushroomy flavor. The vegan mayo was quite good too. All together, it was a bit messy, but it was served in a sandwich wrapper which helped keep things clean. The server was also very attentive to my anti-tomato/ketchup stance and made sure that they weren’t on my burger.
My husband got a veggie burger as well. He chose a Club patty, which consists of zucchini, sweet potato, mushrooms, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, bread crumbs, and onion. It was rich, juicy, and a bit sweet from the sweet potato. The buckwheat bun was, in my opinion, quite nice. However, I know not everyone likes buckwheat like I do, but the flavor of the bread is obvious from the name! My husband, who does not like buckwheat as much as I do, probably should have ordered a different bun. His fault! However, he let me know that their house made ketchup is good (since I wasn’t tasting it).
We ordered potato wedges on the side, which were really good. And if in Slovenia, I recommend the Union radler. Yum! I just wish I had room for dessert because they had tasty looking cakes. Next time I’m in Bled, I’ll be back. Also? Slovenia is incredible.
