Submarine Original has a few different locations around Croatia. We stumbled upon one of their spots while walking through the center of Split one night. There were open seats outside, and a quick glance at the menu confirmed I would have several options. In fact, upon being seated, I realized I could try three different veggie burgers thanks to their “vegan sliders” option. With this, you get mini versions of three of their vegan burgers: the original, the superfood, and the Italian.
For all of their veggie burgers, Submarine Original offers the choice of their house made organic patty or a Beyond Burger. I opted for their house made patty. I thought it tasted pretty good. Though the patties were a bit squishy, it wasn’t so much that they fell apart – at least not in the mini burgers!
The original vegan burger is a classic combination of patty, lettuce, pickle, sauce and cheese – but no tomato. In fact, much to my delight, none of the three burgers came with tomato as a default. They use a vegan cheese, which I didn’t have a strong reaction to. However, I really liked their vegan “special Submarine” sauce, which is very creamy.
The Italian vegan burger comes with Pesto Genovese aioli, rucola, and their special sauce. It was fine, but I wish the pesto flavor were stronger.
Finally, the superfood vegan burger comes with baby spinach, radish sprouts, chickpeas, and their special sauce. I was initially a little suspicious because I thought it would taste too much like bland health food. I was pleasantly surprised! The flavors made sense together.
My husband and I shared truffle fries on the side, which were rich and filling, yum! I also thought the crni limun (black lemon) radler was delightful. Especially for a place in the crowded city center, this was a winning spot.
